Kalki Subramaniam is an activist, artist, author, actor, inspirational speaker and an entrepreneur. She is the founder of Sahodari Foundation which works for the social, economic and political empowerment of transgender persons in India. Kalki advocates nationally against discrimination and hatred against transgender and gender non-conforming people and voices for their inclusion at all levels. She has received numerous awards for social work, film performances, and her literary contributions. On March 8th, 2015 women’s day, Facebook chose Kalki as one of the 12 inspiring women of the world who use Facebook as a community development platform for empowerment. In 2016, Kalki was nominated by Loreal Paris India as the ‘Woman of Worth’ under the arts category. She paints with intensity and has been touring with her artworks in shows across the country. Through Sahodari Foundation she initiated the Trans/hearts project and has been encouraging training transgender people to paint their untold stories on canvas. She aims to reach out to 10,000 transgender people around the world to paint their untold stories. In February 2017, she was invited to Harvard University USA to speak at the India Conference. In June 2017, International Tamil University USA awarded her an honorary doctorate at Madurai.
